Woodmere Museum Docents on the Road: Arthur Carles, modernist painter In-Person
Learn the story of one of the most important artists and teachers in Philadelphia. Arthur Beecher Carles (1882–1952) was inspired by the high-keyed vitality and color in the work of Henri Matisse and other artists he knew during his experiences in early20th c. Paris. His influence sustains the legacy of richly colored, painterly abstraction in Philadelphia. Known for his daring use of color and gestural bravura, Carles embraced the dynamism of life in the twentieth century.
